Mission Statement

To educate the hearing and non-hearing public about the American Sign Language and the culture embracing it, through but not limited to, visual arts. NIEVA's Human Services, Culture/Arts, Education, and Media divisions variously seek to enlighten any and all participants and have them achieve positive results through empowerment, to enhance community integration, and to promote individual growth, integrity, and quality.

Vision

NIEVA recognizes empowerment and enlightenment through education as being a powerful tool for all human beings striving for completion, and recognizes American Sign Language as a visual language employed by the ASL culture, a legitimate minority whose members are defined as those considering ASL as their primary language, and serves this minority as such, hence Education through the Visual Arts; visual arts including without limitation to areas such as all media, the arts, performances, and personal interactions. NIEVA performs its function through four divisions: Human Services, Culture/Arts, Education, and Media.

Value Statements

Purpose

  • To engage to any other activity not prohibited by Chapter 180 of the Massachusetts General Laws or corresponding provisions of other state and federal law.
  • The corporation is organized exclusively for charitable, educational, religious or scientific purposes within the meaning of Section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Goals

  • Empowering the ASL community through education, entertainment and culture.
  • To promote the use of ASL as a legitimate language, and to foster the use of ASL between the hearing and non-hearing public.
  • To engender widespread knowledge of the ASL culture as a legitimate minority.
  • To educate the public-at-large how to approach and interact with the ASL culture.
